The increase in diameter would take more to do one full turn decreasing the acceleration... wouldn't it?

Correct. you will lose acceleration slightly by fitting larger wheels. And increase the car's turning circle, i think. With regards to wheel mass, my OZ's don't seem all that lighter than the standard wheels when i pick them up, but i'm sure the actual figures are quite different

Sorry. Raffe is 100% correct there. I forgot the fact that you normally maintain the rolling radius by choosing a different profile tyre. Do this and your acceleration will be the same

why change what is already on the ? It handles beautifully as it is and the wheels look cool too. this is a debate that has some many sides to it and i think everyone has a slightly differing view from other people, especially in terms of the car's handling and performance. thats my rant over now lol!:D

Nice with all the replies...but the question isn't about handling/performence or the fact that the 18" weigh more and all the problems that I will have in the future...

I'm just curious if anyone knows something about fitting 18" on the ST.
If I would like 7.5x18 with 215x35x18 is that possible whithout mods?
Or do I have to go with 7x18 with 205x35x18...

Parksey, I agree, 35 would be the correct profile

tjalve,
The differrence in outer diameter between your two options is only 7 mm which means that the radius increase is only 1/2 that (3.5 mm). This is less than the difference in diameter between a set of new vs. worn tires. I don't like putting my hand on the fire but I'd say that it's likely they fit. Okay you also have a 5 mm width incease (10 / 2) so maybe this is what you should look at more than the radius increase.

Sorry I can't help more, mine is fitted with 16's and for some reason on these rims they reduced width to 195 so I run a wheel diameter which is 2 cm less than the ones fitted with 17's and 205.

Calculated outer diameter values for reference (in mm):
215x35x18 = 607.7
205x35x18 = 600.7
205X40X17 = 595.8
195x45x16 = 581.9

Thanks Nick!
Just what I'm thinking, the width could be a problem. 7.5" rims and 215 tyres.

If you can that it'd always be preferable to go with a 18x7 wheel and a 205/35/18 tyre. Not sure how easy wheels and tyres are to get hold of in that size though? Once you go above a 17" diameter the width is normally 7.5".

It is diffilcult to find such a dimension, you'll have to go for a 7.5j width. This can easily be done if you play around with the wheel offset (distance between hub mounting face and rim centre line). The standard ST offset is 52.5mm. give me a few days thinking and i'll be able to come up with the offset you'll need for 18's

I would STONGLY suggest you dont put 18" alloys on your

I had 215/35/18 tyres on my Focus and managed to buldge the two front tyres on a trip from Birmingham to Dover to Portsmouth and back to Birmingham... a total of about 500 miles and my wheels could and should have blew out at any time... I was doing 85 all the way back... I am really really glad I checked them as I might not be here saying this today if i hadn't!!!

It is your personal choice, obviously 18" looks better but get the bigger tyres if you are going for them... I'd hate to see anyone experience what I had to contend with... its costly, but more importantly its your life your putting on the line... for what? An extra Inch...

Take Care with your decision.

Your handling will go to pot, so i would suggest getting it lowered rather than increasing the wheel size

If I were to go

Front and back:
205/40/17 7.0
Could I be sure it fit?

If I stick my fingers behind my front wheel there isnt much space between the tyre and the spring.
I have the ST 16" rims on now with 195/50. Whats the depth of the them standard ST Rims?

I think it explains itself, they are really not worth the trouble. 17" are perfect for the and the handling is all set up for those alloys to be on, why change whats right?

As they say, If it aint broken, dont fix it!?
